    Chatfield Brush Fire
    07/20/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 12:31 p.m. on Saturday July 20th, Local members responded to a report of smoke in the area of Highway 85 and Brandon Drive in Douglas County. As members drove the area checking, a second 911 caller reported flames in the grass west of Pioneer Landscaping along the railroad tracks. The incident was upgraded to a large brush fire and additional members were dispatched.
    19-1 Academy Hell Night
    07/17/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    On July 12th, 2019 South Metro Fire Academy 19-1 finished out their 14th week of training by experiencing Hell Night. From the afternoon into the late night hours the recruits staffed Engines, Medics and a Tower and responded to numerous simulated incidents at the Joint Services Facility.  The incidents included false alarms, odor investigations, medical emergencies, rescues and fires.

    On Tuesday morning July 16th, family, friends, and Local members gathered at the SMFR Fallen Firefighters Memorial to honor Engineer Mike Freeman. Engineer Freeman passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2017 after battling job related cancer. https://www.southmetro.
    South Quebec Way Haz-Mat
    07/15/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 9:40 a.m. on Monday July 15, 2019, Local members responded to a hazardous materials incident at 1909 S. Quebec Way in Arapahoe County. A chlorine mishap occurred in the clubhouse pool room, resulting in a small explosion and spill. When members arrived, they isolated the hazard area, determined that no damage or fire occurred and evacuated the immediate area.
    South Platte River Incident
    07/09/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    Just after 8 p.m. on Monday July 8, 2019, Local members responded to a possible water rescue in the South Platte River behind Breckenridge Brewery in Littleton. A person saw an unknown object caught in the rocks and dialed 911. Members specially trained in swift water rescue donned protective equipment while responding to the area and arrived ready to deploy into the river, if needed.
    Christensen Dr. Structure Fire
    07/01/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 12:25 a.m. on Monday July 1, 2019, Local members responded to a house fire in the 4900 block of west Christensen Drive in Arapahoe County. Initial 911 information indicated smoke and flames were coming from the garage and 5 people were unaccounted for. Engine and Medic 13 were first to arrive and observed the garage, vehicles and front of the home engulfed with flames.
    Mercury Dr. Structure Fire
    06/30/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 4:45 p.m. on Sunday June 30th, a home was struck by a bolt of lightning that ignited an attic fire at 13144 Mercury Drive in Douglas County. The occupant of the home dialed 911 and used a fire extinguisher to control the flames. Local members arrived a short time later and helped extinguish all of the hot spots. Thankfully no injuries occurred, and the damage was isolated to the garage.

    06/30/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 3:42 p.m. on Sunday June 30th,afternoon, Local members responded to multiple reports of a garage fire at 16303 E. Fair Avenue in Centennial. A large plume of black smoke was widely visible as units responded. Upon arrival members found the attached 2 car garage fully engulfed with flames, spreading up the back of the home and into the attic.
    Fremont Place Garage Fire
    06/29/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 12:46 a.m. on Saturday July 29th, Local members responded to a house fire in the 4600 block of East Fremont Place. The residents discovered smoke in the home, immediately evacuated and dialed 911. The family was uninjured and did the right thing by staying outside. When members arrived, they observed smoke coming from the garage and began fire attack operations.
    Peakview Ave. Structure Fire
    06/29/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 3:02 p.m. on Friday, June 28, 2019, multiple 911 callers reported a house on fire at 1004 W. Peakview Avenue in Littleton. A large plume of smoke was widely visible for miles and upon arrival, crews found 2 separate 2-story residential structures in flames.

    Hinsdale Road Gas Leak
    06/18/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At approximately 16:05 on June 17th, 2019 Local members was dispatched to a reported gas leak at 16990 Hinsdale Rd. in Centennial.  Members arrived on scene to find a heavy flame coming from a ruptured gas line.  Members monitored the scene while Xcel worked to crimp the line and neutralize the leak.  The road was closed for approximately 2 hours.  No injuries were reported.

    A New Way to Track Carcinogens

    A new article has been published discussing the use of an app that may benefit firefighters throughout their careers. The app is called The National Fire Operations Reporting System (NFORS) Exposure Tracker and it allows firefighter to track their exposure to carcinogens in real-time while they are at work.     At 5:42pm on Thursday May 30th, Local members responded to a residential garage fire on South Fairfax Court. The incident was quickly controlled, all searches proved negative and no injuries occurred.  The incident is currently under investigation. https://www.southmetro.

    Local 858 Summer Picnic/Camp Fest

    Good morning all members, just a quick reminder as we approach June, the annual summer picnic and camping extravaganza is right around the corner June 13th-16th, with the BBQ being on the 16th.  Limited Camping spots are still available for all 3 nights for both tents and plug in sites for campers.  To reserve a spot go to the 858 online store from a computer, or call the union office.
    Duckling Rescue
    05/21/19 - South Metro Firefighters IAFF LOCAL 2086
    At 2:45 p.m. on Sunday May 19, 2019, 2 very attentive and kind people stopped to check on a distressed duck in the street at South Park Lane and Canal Court in Littleton. They discovered her ducklings trapped in a storm drain and called South Metro Fire Rescue for help. Local members assigned to Tower 18 used a fire helmet to gather all 10 ducklings and reunite them with their mother.
